FOUNDED ON: Nonna’s Grocer creator Madeleine Hoy on thinking big in 2022

We’ve never been ones for New Year’s resolutions. What we can get behind though, is kicking off ‘22 with some solid foundations (fresh goals! strong values!). So we’re stoked to have chatted to 5 makers about the ideas their brands are built on and where they’re headed in 2022.

Hello and thanks for chatting to us! Tell us a little bit about yourself.

Thanks for chatting with me! I am a designer based in Wollongong NSW. I used to be an event designer which is where I cut my teeth in the design world, but after struggling with a debilitating chronic illness I took some time away from work to rest at home which is when I began to tinker away with an idea I had. Turned out to be the best thing for me, as I would never have taken the leap into running my own business if I didn't have that time at home to develop my brand.

What led you to start Nonna’s Grocer and what are the values/ideas it's founded on?

My dad told me a few years ago about my Great Grandfather's fruit grocer he owned in Daylesford Victoria, and I was really captivated by this family history I didnt know much about. The idea popped into my head then and there, how cool it would be if I could replicate a lemon but make it a candle. What I loved about this idea was that it really connected my design trade with my Great Grandfathers fruit trade... a way to feel close to my heritage.

I began brewing a little concept and Nonna's Grocer was born.

What's the biggest lesson you've learnt while running your biz?

ohhh 2 things.

1. Be patient! Some things take a lot of time to develop and you have to find a way to stay focused and keep the momentum of work flowing.

2. How much passion and drive you can create when you start your own business. I am pinching myself every day that I get to work on something I really cherish and love.

How would you describe your approach to 2022?

Think big. I have loved growing the candle making craft and last year was about passing on my knowledge to a few others. This year is about thinking beyond my surroundings and playing with my concept on a new level, whilst still maintaining our ethos.

Who/what inspires you to keep doing what to do?

My partner continually inspires me. The patience and support he gives me has allowed me to really step away and go into my Nonna world. The many nights of cooking, friendship and a shoulder to moan on is what drives me.
